Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Laser-engraved headstones in New Jersey must comply with the same cemetery regulations as all other monuments — maximum height, base dimensions, permitted materials, and approved finishes. Laser Headstone Guide confirms these requirements at every cemetery before production. The choice of laser engraving for a portrait does not change the compliance requirements, and they are all addressed before any stone is cut.

Foundation Requirements

Every laser-engraved upright headstone requires proper foundation installation — concrete footings extending 30 to 42 inches below the frost line in New Jersey. Laser Headstone Guide handles all foundation work as part of every commission. Our installation crews serve all 14 NJ counties. No separate contractor is needed.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Laser engraving offers particular advantages for faith-specific imagery that requires fine detail. The precision of laser engraving captures the intricacy of religious symbols — the detail of a carved crucifix face, the fineness of Hebrew script, the complexity of Orthodox cross forms — with accuracy that benefits from the technology's precision. Laser Headstone Guide carves and engraves inscriptions in Hebrew, Cyrillic, and Polish Latin in-house. We serve families in English, Russian, and Polish.

Laser-Engraved Headstone

A laser-engraved headstone at Laser Headstone Guide begins with a conversation about what the memorial should convey. If the family wants a portrait — a true likeness of their loved one on the stone — laser engraving on polished black granite is typically the right approach. The laser process works by abrading the polished surface in precise gradations, creating a tonal image that reads as a photograph on the stone. Combined with hand-carved lettering and hand-carved decorative elements, the result is a memorial that uses the best available technique for each of its components. Portrait photographs are submitted by the family. Our team processes the image and develops a design proof showing how the portrait will appear on the stone, alongside the inscription layout, the stone's form, and any additional imagery. The family reviews and approves the proof before production begins. This is the right way to commission a laser-engraved headstone: with full visibility into the design before the stone is made. Laser Headstone Guide has provided laser engraving services in our Morris County, NJ workshop for New Jersey families, alongside 80+ years of traditional hand-carving. American-made granite. Cemetery-compliant specifications. Complete installation service.

Granite (laser-engraved) Options

Polished black granite is the material of choice for laser-engraved portrait headstones. The high-contrast polished surface produces the clearest portrait engravings — the difference between polished stone and laser-abraded stone creates a full tonal range that reads as a photograph. Laser Headstone Guide sources American-made polished black granite as the standard for laser portrait work. Gray granite is also available for laser engraving with lower contrast.

Custom Design Process

The complete laser-engraved headstone process at Laser Headstone Guide is managed in-house from design consultation to cemetery installation. Consultation, digital proofing, material confirmation, laser engraving production, hand-carving of other elements, finishing, inspection, and installation — all handled by our Morris County team. Families receive one company responsible for every step.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Laser Headstone Guide's six-step laser-engraved headstone process follows the same sequence as every commission, with laser engraving integrated into the production phase. Consultation: we gather the portrait photograph, design direction, and cemetery requirements. Design proofing: a digital proof is produced showing the laser-engraved portrait alongside hand-carved elements. Material selection: polished black granite is typically recommended. Production: laser engraving of the portrait, hand-carving of inscriptions and other design elements — both executed in our Morris County workshop. Finishing and inspection: the complete stone is reviewed before delivery. Installation: our crew handles foundation preparation and stone placement at the NJ cemetery. The same six steps, with both laser precision and hand-craft applied where each excels. Over 80 years in New Jersey.
